The Tribal Research Centre initially under the control of Registrar of the Tamil university, Thanjavur was established at Udhagamandalam Nilgiris district of Tamilnadu in the year of 1983 - 1984. In the year of 1995, according to G.O.Ms No.161, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department of Tamilnadu date.30.09.1995 Government has issued orders for taking over the administrative control of the Tribal Research Centre (TRC) from the Tamil University Thanjavur. Then and the Tribal Research Centre (TRC) of Tamilnadu is managed by a fulltime Director and staffs from 01.02.1996. The Tribal Research Centre of Tamilnadu is very much identified as tribal essential institute for the welfare of the 36 Scheduled Tribes of Tamilnadu. The centre's ultimate aim is to frame the strategy for the development of Tribal communities of Tamilnadu through schemes for the tribes, research on tribal status and training for the tribal youth. Review and evaluation of Tribal Welfare Schemes, Tribal needs and problems are also done by the research centre.
Tribal museum established in 02-10-1996 at Tribal Research Centre, Udhagamandalam, Tamilnadu is to preserve the cultural heritage of the tribals. It was decided to setup a Museum on Tribals in the Tribal research Centre at Udhagamandalam at a cost of Rs.200.00 Lakhs, under the centrally sponsored scheme of Research and Training aspect. The expenditure is shared equally with central and State Government.
