Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme for the children of those engaged in unclean occupation

The award of Pre Matric scholarship to the children of those engaged in unclean occupation (scavenging of tanning, flaying, Waste Pickers and sweepers) irrespective of income, community and religion are being covered under this programme. The Government of India bears 100% of the total expenditure over and above the committed level.

Details of the rates of scholarship for day scholars and hostellers are as follows:

During the year 2013-14 a sum of Rs.765.48 lakhs has been spent and 40536 students were benefited under this scheme.

The following additional benefits are extended from the year 1.4.1998 to the other abled children of those parents who are engaged in unclean occupation
  1. Reader allowance of Rs.100/- per month for blind students for std. IX and X.
  2. Provision of transport allowance of Rs.50/- per month for the other abled student, if a student does not reside in the hostel, which is within the premises of educational institution. (The disability as per the said Act is defined as blindness, low-vision, hearing impairment, leprosy-cured, locomotor disability, mental retardation and mental illness).
  3. Escort allowance of Rs.50/- per month for severely handicapped day-scholar student with lower extreme disability
  4. Special pay of Rs.100/- per month will be admissible to any employee of the hostel as helper who extends help to a severely orthopedically handicapped student residing in the hostel managed by the educational institution or by the State Government who may need the assistance of a helper.
  5. Allowance of Rs.150/- per month is eligible towards extra coaching to mentally retarded and mentally ill students in std. IX and X.
