The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India sanctioned its approval to establish 100 Eklavya Model Residential Schools in the Tribal Areas of the country. The school was promoted as Eklavya Model Residential Higher Secondary School in 2000. In the year of 2013, it was changed as boys’ school and renamed as Eklavya Model Residential Boys Higher Secondary School. The hill climate is pleasing and very modest due to the height from 2000 feet to 3000 feet from sea level. Kallakurichi is the nearest city about 56 KMs from Kalrayan Hills while Salem is about 70 KMs. The school is located on 10.47 acres of open land surrounded by farms. The location provides students with friendly and peaceful learning environment
There are 50 Revenue village having 163 Tribal Habitations in Kalrayan Hills. In G.O.MS.No. 82, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department, dt. 17.7.1998, the Government of Tamil Nadu approved the proposal for setting up of a residential school in Villupuram District at Kalrayan Hills and the responsibility of forming a society was entrusted to the Special Officer, ITDP for running the above school. As per the guidelines of Government of India , a society was formed in the name of “Tamil Nadu Tribal Welfare Residential and Educational Institution Society,” and registered on 18.12.2000 headed by the Secretary to Government, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department, Chennai. It was also ordered that this school start functioning in the year 1997-98 itself in a temporary building with 6th std 9th Std and 11th Std. The School started functioning from 16.9.1998 at Vellimalai, Sankarapuram Taluk,Villupuram District, Tamil Nadu, 606 207.The students are admitted into these schools by conducting entrance examination. They are admitted purely on the merit of marks, obtained in the entrance examination. Every year the number of students who appear for the entrance examination, outnumber the number of seats available. From 2014-2015 academic year, Vellimalai EMRS is functioning only for boys. There are two Boys Hostels functioning in the School.
